Frederick Earnshaw [e.1.2.9]

Frederick Earnshaw was the ninth child of Thomas Earnshaw & Jane Turnbull born September 3rd, 1876 at Haswell, Co Durham.

In 1881 Frederick was living at home at Elemore Lane, Hetton-le-Hole, Co Durham. He had 4 older brothers & a sister.

Frederick was still living at home in 1891 at Elemore Lane with his parents & 3 brothers.

Frederick married Elizabeth Eggleston in Oct-December 1900, the marriage being registered at Houghton. Elizabeth was born January 9th, 1875 at Elemore Lane, the daughter of Sarah Fitton & Matthew Eggleston, a coal miner.

In 1901 Frederick & Elizabeth were living with Elizabeth’s parents, 5 sisters & a brother at Elemore Lane, Pittington. They had a son Tom F (4 months) & Frederick was a coal miner, hewer.

By 1911 Frederick & Elizabeth had moved to 5 Seymour Terrace, Easington Lane, Hetton-le-Hole & Frederick was still a coal miner. They now had 3 children – Tom Fitton, Frederick (7) & Doris (2). Living with them were Frederick's brothers John & James Earnshaw, both working at the colliery.

Frederick was a member of the Miners’ Lodge at Elemore Colliery & was recorded as being elected auditor in September 1910 & in subsequent years (Sunderland Daily Echo & Shipping Gazette).

Daughter Doris married Patrick Owen Burns on October 20th, 1934 at St Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Houghton, Co Durham.  Patrick was born April-June 1905, the only son of Mary Lourie & Peter Burns, a coal miner, of Hetton-le-Hole.  Doris carried a bouquet of bronze chrysanthemums & wore a dress of  green velvet.  (Sunderland Daily Echo & Shipping Gazette, October 20th, 1934) 

The 1939 register shows Frederick & Elizabeth still living at 5 Seymour Terrace, Hetton & Frederick was described as incapacitated & a coal miner wasteman below ground. Son Tom & his wife Lily (nee Cook) & family were living at 34 Fairy Street, Hetton in 1939 & Tom was a colliery deputy below ground.  Son Frederick & his wife Elizabeth (nee Maggs) & their sons Derrick & Donald, both at school, were living at 43 Derwent St, Hetton & Frederick was a colliery official under manager below ground.

Daughter Doris & her husband Patrick & family were living at 22 Springwell Terrace, Hetton in 1939 where Patrick was a colliery blacksmith.

Elizabeth died on November 20th, 1947 at 5 Seymour Terrace, Easington Lane.

Frederick of 34 Fairy Street, Hetton-le-Hole was buried on March 9th, 1956 aged 79, at St Nicholas, Hetton-le-Hole.
