John Earnshaw [e.1.6.4]

John Earnshaw was the fourth child of Robert Earnshaw and Ann Richardson born September 22nd, 1875 at Seaham, Co. Durham.

In 1891 John was living at home at Grange Terrace, Ryhope and employed as a paper maker.

In 1901 John (known as Jack) was still at home when the family had moved to Stockton Terrace, Ryhope. He was a machine minder at the paper mill.

He married Margaret Jane Welch in Jan-March 1910 at Sunderland, but they appear to have had no family. Margaret was born November 14th, 1876 at Sunderland & christened December 24th, 1876 at St Peter’s, Monkwearmouth, daughter of Margaret Jane & Joseph Welch, captain of a steam tug.

In 1911 Jack & Margaret were living at 11 East Whickham St, Sunderland & Jack was described as an electric tramcar motorman.

The 1939 register shows Jack & Margaret living at 13 Charlton Road, Sunderland & Jack was described as incapacitated.

Margaret died on January 27th, 1943, aged 66 at 13 Charlton Rd, Fulwell, Sunderland.  Administration of her estate was granted to widowed Jack, a retired tram-shed foreman & her effects were £786.3s.3d.

Jack died September 16th, 1944, aged 69 at the Municipal Hospital, Sunderland and is buried in St Aidans cemetery, Grangetown alongside his wife Margaret. Probate of Jack’s estate was granted to brothers Frederick Earnshaw, commercial traveler & George William Earnshaw, tram driver.  His effects were £1,598.18s.3d.
