Sarah Horton [h.1.1]

Sarah Horton was the first child of Henry Horton & Esther Lines christened May 22nd, 1805 at St Phillip’s, Birmingham.

Sarah married John Shaw on June 16th, 1827 at St Peter & St Paul, Aston Juxta, Birmingham. John was born October 28th, 1806 in Birmingham & christened June 10th, 1808 at St Martin’s, Birmingham, the son of Sarah & Joseph Shaw.

In 1841 Sarah & John were living at Ward St, Birmingham where John was a jeweller. They had 7 children by this time – George (12), William (10), Elizabeth (8), Sarah (7), Emma (5), Mary (4) & John (2).

Son George Frederick married Jane Breese in 1848 in West Bromwich. They & their family lived in Aston, Birmingham where George was also a jeweller.

By 1851 the family were living at 16 Great Hampton Row, Birmingham. At home were William, a jeweller, Elizabeth, a dressmaker, Sarah, Emma, Mary, John, an errand boy, Alfred (9) & Sophia (6).

John, aged 55, died suddenly on January 14th, 1860 at great Hampton Row.

In 1858 son William married Ann West in Birmingham.  They & their family lived in Birmingham & William became a pencil case maker.

The 1861 census shows widowed Sarah living at the same address & now described as a jeweller. At home were John & Alfred, both jewellers, Elizabeth, a dressmaker, Sarah, house assistant, Emma, a milliner, Mary A, house assistant & Caroline S (Sophia), a school teacher.

Son Alfred married Elizabeth Griffiths in 1869 in Birmingham.

Son John, a jeweller, married Sarah Parkes & they had 6 children. Some of the family emigrated to Canada & the 1891 census shows the 4 daughters – Florence, Ada, Rose & Annie all living together in Toronto, Ontario with the Simpson family.

By 1871 Sarah was living at Burbury St, Aston, Birmingham with her daughters Sarah & Mary A. Also with them was daughter Caroline Sophia (who had married Joseph Henry Wakefield, a tool maker, in 1865) & Sarah’s grandson Frank Harry Wakefield, aged 1. Sophia, a dress maker, was widowed by 1876 & in 1881 was with her 2 children described as nephews – Frank (11) & Arthur William (8) Wakefield. With Sophia were her 2 sisters, Mary Shaw & widowed Elizabeth Lucas, a dress maker. Elizabeth Lucas was daughter Elizabeth who had married Thomas Lucas in 1865.  Sadly Thomas died in 1875.

Daughter Sarah married widower Thomas Wigley Anslow, a boot maker, in 1872 in Aston. 

In 1901 widowed Caroline Sophia Wakefield was living with her sisters Emma Shaw, a monthly nurse, & Elizabeth Lucas, a plain sewer, at 50 Williams St, Aston.
Daughter Caroline Sophia married again in Oct-December 1906 & her second husband was Rubley Collington.  Sadly Rubley died, aged 63, just before the census of 1911 when Caroline was again living with her sister Emma Shaw at 204 Guildford St, Aston.

h.1.1.2 William Shaw born July 25th, 1830, christened August 11th, 1830 at St Phillip’s, Birmingham; died April-June 1909 in Birmingham
h.1.1.3 Elizabeth Shaw born January 28th, 1832, christened February 21st, 1832 at St phillip’s, Birmingham; died Jan-March 1911 in Birmingham
h.1.1.4 Sarah Shaw born December 15th, 1833, christened December 31st, 1833 at St phillip’s, Birmingham; buried at Warstone Lane Cemetery, Birmingham in Oct-December 1915
h.1.1.5 Emma Shaw born May 18th, 1835, christened June 10th, 1835 at St Phillip’s, Birmingham
h.1.1.6 Mary Ann Shaw born August 3rd, 1837, christened august 29th, 1837 at St Phillip’s, Birmingham
h.1.1.7 John Shaw born August 8th, 1839, christened January 22nd, 1840 at St Phillip’s, Birmingham
