William Hall was the sixth child of John Hall & Margaret Slack christened November 7th, 1849 at South Hetton, Co Durham.
William was living with his parents & brothers & sisters at South Hetton until his father died in 1870.
At the time of the 1871 census he was still at South Hetton with his widowed mother, brother James & sister Barbara. William & James were both coal miners at this time.
William married Mary Angles in Oct-December 1872, the marriage being registered at Easington. Mary was christened June 17th, 1849 at Houghton-le-Spring, daughter of Elizabeth & Robert Aungle, an agricultural labourer. Sadly both parents had died by 1861, when Mary, aged 12, was found at the Sunderland St. Union Workhouse Special Return in Houghton-le-Spring, along with 2 (presumed) younger sisters – Isabella (8) & Elizabeth (6). The orphaned children were receiving education at the workhouse as they were listed as scholars. By 1871 Mary had left the workhouse & was employed as a domestic servant for Robert Brydon, a land agent & veterinary surgeon, at Dawdon, Seaham.
In 1881 William & Mary were living at Eight Rows Third, South Hetton. William was a coal miner & they had 2 sons – John (7) & James (2). With them was Mary’s sister Elizabeth Angles & a 4 year old niece Mary Isabella Angles, daughter of Elizabeth Angles born in 1876.
By 1891 the family had moved to Chapel Row, South Hetton. Son John was now a coal miner, James was a scholar & there was a new addition – Margaret (8). Mary’s sister Elizabeth was still with them.
In 1901 William & Mary were at 6 South St, South Hetton & William was now a deputy overman in the coal mine. Their daughter Margaret was still at home, now married to Isaac Atkinson (21). Mary’s sister Elizabeth was also still living there. Son John had married Dorothy Eggleston in 1897 & they were living at Front St, Easington Lane at the time of the 1901 census & John was a coal miner hewer. Son James had married Helena Darbyshire from Wigan in 1900 & at the time of the census they were living at 1 Cottages, Snippers Gate, Haswell & James was a coal miner putter below ground.
Mary died aged 54 at 6 South St, South Hetton & was buried on August 17th, 1903 at South Hetton.
The 1911 census shows widowed William living at 40 James St, South Hetton & was described as a colliery labourer below ground. Sister-in-law Elizabeth Angles was still living with him. Visiting them were Elizabeth’s son-in-law Robert Bateman, who had married Mary Isabella Angles (Elizabeth’s daughter) in 1897, & 2 of their children - George & John Thomas Bateman. Mary Isabella herself was at home with 5 other children at Binchester Moor, Auckland.
William, aged 72, died at 19 Caroline St, Hetton-le-Hole in 1920 & was buried on April 8th at St Nicholas Anglican Church, Hetton-le-Hole, Co Durham.
